Medicover Hospital Navi Mumbai Launches a Comprehensive 24×7 Stroke Unit to Handle Emergencies
The new dedicated stroke unit offers rapid diagnostics, multidisciplinary care and advanced treatment options for stroke patients, bringing critical neurological services closer to families in Navi Mumbai and surrounding areas
Navi Mumbai: In a critical step for neurological health in the region, Medicover Hospital, Navi Mumbai, has launched a comprehensive 24×7 stroke unit designed to deliver immediate and specialised care for stroke emergencies. Recognising that “time is brain”, the unit is equipped with rapid CT/MRI imaging, thrombolysis and thrombectomy capabilities, neuro-ICU support, and a trained multidisciplinary stroke team available around the clock. This initiative aims to improve outcomes for patients suffering from stroke in Navi Mumbai, Panvel and neighbouring areas.
IPS and Joint Commissioner of Police for Navi Mumbai Shri Sanjay Yenpure, who was the Chief Guest underscored the importance of timely action in stroke management.
A stroke occurs when the blood supply to part of the brain is interrupted (ischemic stroke) or when a blood vessel in the brain bursts (haemorrhagic stroke). Common causes include uncontrolled high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, smoking, obesity, heart disease and a sedentary lifestyle. “Early signs are sudden weakness or numbness (often on one side of the body), trouble speaking or understanding, vision problems, dizziness, or a sudden, severe headache. The widely used mnemonic “BEFAST” (Balance, Eyes, Face drooping, Arm weakness, Speech difficulty, Time to call emergency) helps identify symptoms early. It is necessary to seek treatment in the first four-and-a-half hours after the onset of stroke symptoms. Without timely intervention, a stroke can lead to permanent brain damage, long-term disability, or death; every minute counts during a stroke,” said Dr Pawan Ojha, Consultant Neurologist and Director Neurosciences (Maharashtra), Medicover Hospitals, Navi Mumbai.
Dr Pawan Ojha added, “Stroke continues to be one of the leading causes of death and disability in India, placing a heavy burden on patients, families, and the healthcare system. Every day, we see individuals who lose precious time because they fail to recognise early warning signs, often mistaking stroke symptoms for simple weakness or fatigue. Unfortunately, this delay can cost lives or leave survivors with long-term paralysis, speech problems, or dependence on others for basic activities. Our goal is not just to treat stroke, but to build awareness, encourage early intervention, and provide world-class care that gives patients a second chance at life. Early treatment not only saves lives but also helps preserve quality of life by reducing long-term disability. By establishing a dedicated 24×7 stroke unit, we are committing to delivering rapid, lifesaving care when it matters most.
Sandip Joshi, Center Head Navi Mumbai at Medicover Hospitals, said, “With the new advanced stroke unit, we bring together expertise, state-of-the-art technology and a patient-centric approach, ensuring that when a stroke strikes, patients receive the fastest, most effective care available. Our commitment is to save lives and restore hope for patients and their families.”
