Lilavati Hospital and Research Centre Launches Auditory Verbal Therapy Clinic
Mr. Rajiv K. Mehta, Permanent Trustee for Life, Lilavati Hospital & Research Centre along with the ENT team.
Recognising the critical need for comprehensive rehabilitation for children with hearing loss, Lilavati Hospital and Research Centre has launched a dedicated Auditory Verbal Therapy (AVT) Clinic. The clinic will provide specialised therapy and family centred support to children with hearing loss, particularly those who have undergone cochlear implant surgery, a hearing device that provides access to sound for children with severe to profound hearing loss. The clinic aims to help these children learn to listen, speak, communicate and integrate into day to day life and education.
According to a study published in the International Journal of Preventive Medicine, approximately 5-6 newborns out of every 1000 are affected by hearing loss[1]. These children with hearing impairment are often not diagnosed till they pass the crucial developmental milestones highlighting the importance of early identification and intervention. For these children, rehabilitation becomes extremely critical for optimal speech and language outcomes.
While cochlear implants help them hear sounds, it alone does not automatically translate into effective communication. AVT helps children use the sounds that they hear to develop speech and language skills making it easier and simpler for them to communicate, learn, and interact with others. Through regular therapy sessions, children are empowered to participate in everyday conversations and educational activities.
Speaking about the launch Mr. Rajiv K. Mehta, Permanent Trustee, Lilavati Hospital & Research Centre, Mumbai said, “Cochlear implantation is only the first step in a child’s hearing journey. Through our AVT clinic we aim to ensure that children not only gain access to sound but also develop the speech and confidence needed to participate fully in school and daily life. This initiative reflects our commitment to making quality hearing rehabilitation accessible to all children in need including underprivileged kids.”
The launch of the AVT clinic further strengthens the hospital's commitment to serving society and supporting children in living an independent and fulfilling life.
