In a significant medical achievement, doctors at Fortis Escorts Hospital, Faridabad have successfully performed a bone marrow transplant on a 69-year-old man diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma, a rare form of blood cancer. Multiple Myeloma is a chronic and incurable blood cancer characterized by cycles of relapse and remission, and if left untreated or inadequately managed, it can eventually become resistant to treatment and prove fatal. The team of doctors led by Dr Siddharth Shanker Sood, Senior Consultant, Medical Oncology, Fortis Escorts Hospital, Faridabad managed the highly complex case with a carefully planned treatment strategy, leading to a successful bone marrow transplant and significantly improved prognosis.

The patient came to Fortis Faridabad in an extremely frail condition, suffering from severe bone pain, recurrent skin and bone infections with significantly restricted mobility that had left him wheelchair bound. Detailed diagnostic evaluation, including bone marrow examination, confirmed the diagnosis of Multiple Myeloma. Considering the patient’s advanced age and fragile clinical condition, the team of doctors, initiated treatment using targeted therapies while avoiding conventional chemotherapy.  The treatment successfully brought the disease into remission, following which the doctors proceeded with a bone marrow transplant, considered the standard of care for transplant-eligible Multiple Myeloma patients and among the most effective approaches for improving long-term survival outcomes. Following the treatment and transplant, the patient showed remarkable recovery, regained independent mobility, and is no longer confined to a wheelchair.

Giving details of the case, Dr Siddharth Shanker Sood, Senior Consultant, Medical Oncology, Fortis Escorts Hospital, Faridabad said, “While Multiple Myeloma remains a complex and lifelong blood cancer that requires timely and strategic medical intervention. In this case, the patient came to us in a very frail condition, our immediate focus was to stabilize him and bring the disease under control using targeted medicines, without exposing him to conventional chemotherapy. Once remission was achieved, we moved quickly to perform the bone marrow transplant, which offers the best chance for longer remission and improved survival in eligible patients. Despite his advanced age, the patient’s strong mental resilience and positive response to therapy made him a suitable candidate for the procedure. Following the transplant, the patient showed encouraging recovery and now has significantly improved chances of long-term survival.

Dr Abhishek Sharma, Facility Director, Fortis Escorts Hospital, Faridabad said, “Successfully performing a bone marrow transplant on a 70-year-old patient in a frail condition highlight not only the clinical expertise of our team but also the advanced infrastructure and specialized transplant support available at our hospital. At Fortis Escorts Faridabad, our focus remains on making cutting-edge cancer care accessible and ensuring that patients, irrespective of age, have the opportunity to receive the most effective treatment and achieve a better quality of life.”
