The hospital felicitated children who recovered after critical care treatment in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), while also recognizing the emotional strength of parents, caregivers, and healthcare teams during World PICU Awareness Week 2026

In observance of World PICU Awareness Day 2026, Ankura Hospital for Women & Children organized a special event, themed “Caring for Caregivers,” to celebrate the courage of children who battled critical illnesses and the dedication of the families and healthcare professionals who supported them throughout their recovery journey. The event included felicitation of children who were successfully discharged from the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). The hospital also organized engaging activities for PICU Graduate children and their families, distributed gift hampers to young survivors, to make the occasion memorable and comforting for attendees.

A Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) is a specialized hospital unit designed to provide advanced medical care and continuous monitoring for children suffering from life-threatening illnesses or serious injuries. Children admitted to PICU may include those with severe infections, respiratory distress, trauma, neurological emergencies, post-surgical complications, organ failure, or other critical medical conditions that require round-the-clock expert care and advanced life-support systems. World PICU Awareness Week is observed to spread awareness about pediatric critical care and to acknowledge the immense emotional and physical strength shown by children, caregivers, and healthcare teams during difficult medical situations. The initiative also highlighted the importance of early intervention, specialized intensive care services, and family-centered support systems in improving survival and recovery outcomes in critically ill children.

Dr. Milind Jambagi, Head of PICU and Pediatric Emergency Services, Ankura Hospital  and Chairperson, WFPICCS’ Education Committee, Geneva, said, “Every child who enters the PICU fights an incredibly difficult battle, and behind every child stands a family carrying fear, hope, and emotional exhaustion. World PICU Awareness Day is not only about recognizing medical care but also about appreciating the silent strength of parents, caregivers, nurses, and doctors who stand together throughout the child’s recovery journey. Through this event, we want families to know that they are not alone and that every small recovery is a moment worth celebrating. Seeing children return healthy and smiling after critical illness is the biggest motivation for every healthcare professional working in pediatric intensive care.”

The event aimed to create awareness about pediatric critical care while offering emotional encouragement to families who have gone through challenging medical experiences with their children.
